Garrison: Engineering Works Guide (WoD 6.2)
Table of Contents
The Engineering Works is a Small Garrison building that Engineers and Non-Engineers can use to craft Draenor-specific Engineering recipes.
While we explain, in this article, how to unlock all levels of the Engineering Works, you may be interested in our guide to unlocking all the Garrison buildings. We also have a guide to leveling Engineering in Draenor.
Main Perks
For Engineers, the main perk of the Engineering Works is that it allows you to create a maximum of 12x Gearspring Parts per day, in addition to the 10x you can already craft with Gearspring Parts (less with an Engineering skill lower than 700). These extra Parts are really useful, because they allow you to craft more Draenor recipes, which means you make more money off the Auction House and you level up Engineering to 700 faster. The Engineering Works is also where you buy your Draenor-specific Engineering recipes.
For Non-Engineers, the main perk of the Engineering Works is that the resident Engineer can craft most of the Draenor-specific Engineering recipes for you, with the exception of item upgrades and some of the more costly recipes.

Unlocking the Engineering Works
In this section, we are going to tell you how to unlock the Engineering Works, Level 1, 2, and 3.
Unlocking the Engineering Works, Level 1
The Engineering Works Level 1 is unlocked when you upgrade your Town Hall to Level 2.
Engineers can build this building with a Town Hall Level 1, because they have a chance to loot Gnomish Location Transponder (Alliance) and Burned-Out Hand Cannon (Horde). This item drops from humanoid mobs around Draenor and starts a quest line that eventually rewards the plan to build the Engineering Works, Garrison Blueprint: Engineering Works, Level 1, and Draenor Engineering, which teaches basic Draenor recipes that can be used to level up the profession.
If you are an Engineer and the quest item does not drop for you, then you can buy your Draenor Engineering for 100 from the Engineer at your Engineering Works, after upgrading your Town Hall to Level 2.
Unlocking the Engineering Works, Level 2
Garrison Blueprint: Engineering Works, Level 2 is sold by the blueprint vendor at your Garrison once you reach level 96 or once you complete your Talador Outpost. You can buy it with 750 . You can also buy it from the blueprint vendor in Ashran without restrictions with an Outpost Building Assembly Notes, which can only be obtained twice, once when questing in Gorgrond and once when questing in the Spires of Arak. so the purpose of this Below, you will find the Alliance and Horde vendors.
Vendor | Faction | Location | Cost |
---|---|---|---|
Sparz Boltwist | Alliance | Garrison, next to Architect Table | 750 |
Kinkade Jakobs | Alliance | Ashran, next to Flightmaster | 1x Outpost Building Assembly Notes |
Rezlak | Horde | Garrison, next to Architect Table | 750 |
Torgg Flexington | Horde | Ashran, next to Flightmaster | 1x Outpost Building Assembly Notes |
Unlocking the Engineering Works, Level 3
Garrison Blueprint: Engineering Works, Level 3 is a reward from completing the Working More Orders achievement, which requires you to complete 250 Work Orders at your Garrison. This achievement is account-wide.
Once you complete the achievement, the blueprint is not directly handed over to you. You still need to buy it from Sparz Boltwist (Alliance) or Rezlak (Horde) for 1,000 .
Work Orders
Work Orders are unlocked with your Engineering Works Level 1 and allow you to create Gearspring Parts. A Work Order takes 4 hours to complete and transforms 2x True Iron Ore and 2x Blackrock Ore into 1x Gearspring Parts (2x with a level 100 follower assigned to the Engineering Works). This means that you can complete a maximum of 6 Work Orders per day for a total yield of 6 to 12 Gearspring Parts.
Unlocking Work Orders
When you first build the Engineering Works on a character, the resident Engineer at the building gives you Your First Engineering Work Order. To complete it, talk to the Engineer's Assistant and give the required 2x True Iron Ore and 2x Blackrock Ore. The small box outside the Engineering Works should activate immediately and you can loot the Engineering Work Order that you need to turn in to complete the quest. Doing so rewards you with 5x Gearspring Parts.
Increasing Yield
After upgrading the Engineering Works to Level 2, you can assign a follower with the Engineering trait to work at the Engineering Works. The higher the level of your follower, the higher the chance that the Work Order will generate 2 Gearspring Parts instead of only 1. With a level 100 follower, you are guaranteed to get 2 Gearspring Parts.
While working at the Engineering Works, your follower receives experience for every Work Order completed.
Increasing Queue Size
You can queue up to a certain number of Work Orders, depending on your Engineering Works's level (7 at Level 1, 14 at Level 2, 21 at Level 3).
Having a Storehouse Level 3 increases the maximum number of Work Orders by 15, which means a maximum of 22 Work Orders at Level 1, 29 at Level 2, and 36 at Level 3.
Being able to queue more Work Orders does not increase your yield, but it does allow you to let more time pass before you have to go back to the Engineering Works to refill your queue of Work Orders.
Cost Comparison Between Work Orders and Engineering Recipe
Gearspring Parts costs 10x True Iron Ore and 10x Blackrock Ore, and produces between 4 and 10 Gearspring Parts, depending on your Engineering skill. Below level 600, you only produce 4. Between level 600 and 700 the yield slowly increases to reach 10 at level 700.
Work Orders cost 2x True Iron Ore and 2x Blackrock Ore, and produce between 1 and 2 Gearspring Parts. With no follower or a level 90 follower, you produce only 1. The closer your follower is to 100, the higher the chance that the yield will be 2. With a follower level 100, you always produce 2.
As you can see, using Work Orders to craft Gearspring Parts is less expensive than using the Engineering recipe. So, if you are short on materials, you should prioritise Work Orders (unless, of course, you have reached Engineering level 700 and have no follower, or a low-level follower, in your Engineering Works). That said, the Mine in your Garrison you should provide with more than enough materials to allow you to use the Engineering recipe every day and to keep your Work Orders queue full.
Resident Engineer
The Engineer at the Engineering Works interacts with you in one of two ways, depending on whether or not you have the Engineering profession.
For Engineers
Buying the Draenor Engineering recipes from the Engineer in your Engineering Works is the only way to obtain them. Each recipe costs a number of Secrets of Draenor Engineering. You can make one of these items every day using the Secrets of Draenor Engineering Engineering recipe, which costs 5x True Iron Ore. The table below lists all of the recipes you can buy and the amount of Secrets of Draenor Engineering it costs to buy them (though some of them only require Gold).

Crafting an item through your Engineer costs exactly the same quantity of materials it does when a regular Engineer crafts it. Some of the recipes are locked until you reach a certain level with the Engineering Works (see table below).
