Mythic+ Tank Rankings: PTR Tier List for The War Within (Patch 11.2 / Season 3)

Last updated on Jul 13, 2025 at 10:53 by Petko 194 comments

From the weakest to the strongest specialization, each provide unique character distinction and add value toward shaping the seasonal "meta" of Mythic+. These PTR-based Tank specialization rankings provided for The War Within's third Season of Mythic+ are based on pure Tanking survivability, DPS and group-added-value such as utility, mobility, and defensive options.

This list will be updated as new tuning and class changes come out over the course of leading up to the season's start and beyond.

About the PTR Tier List

Our analysis provides an estimate of the current Mythic+ meta with weekly updates every Sunday on the website, immediately after Sunday live on stream, until Season 3 arrives. However, it is important to remember that there will be many more changes, and what you see is not the final product. Instead, it is a progression of how each specialization performs from the start of the beta to the actual season release.

If you are interested in the DPS and Tank versions of this 11.2 PTR Tier List, check the links below!

If you are interested in our current tier list for Season 2 Patch 11.1.7, you can find that below:

Please note that anything I say is purely subjective and represents my opinion. However, it is an educated guess based on numerous hours of PTR testing and extensive discussions with some of the best theorycrafters from each of their specs. If you have a different opinion, that is perfectly fine. I will be happy to answer any questions in the comment section. After the Beta testing is completed, we will compile all the data and create the official Tier List of Season 3. Thank you for reading, and enjoy!

Criteria of the Tier List

This tier list is entirely based on several factors, such as tank durability, group composition synergy, mobility, damage profile, self-sustain, and external party-wide cooldowns.

Please keep in mind that what you're about to read is a preliminary iteration of the 11.2 Season 3 tier list in The War Within expansion, and it WILL change before the season is released. Nothing written here is a guarantee or promise. All opinions are subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt. I update this tier list every Sunday at 14:00 CEST live on my stream, before being uploaded on the website. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Tank Tier List for Season 3 of Mythic+ in The War Within

Below, you can find the full rankings for Tank specializations in The War Within Mythic+. We encourage you to read further and understand why some classes are placed lower or higher than expected, with several factors considered, such as having a 4-piece tier-set active at all times and the key levels.

S+
Protection Warrior Protection Warrior

Protection Warrior has seen a ton of changes leading to Season 3, which made the spec much better in a 5-man content. The spec self-sustain has skyrocketed, which improves the durability of Protection Warrior, and although continuous magical damage can be an issue, they are quite durable against heavy physical damage. In addition, they have the highest damage output across all tank specs, which is a large influence on their overall rankings. At last, their utility and mob control is an area where they could benefit from  further changes, the sheer raw power of specs makes them one of the best tanks so far on PTR.

Vengeance Demon Hunter Vengeance Demon Hunter

Vengeance Demon Hunter is entering Season 3 even better than Season 2. One of the biggest changes is their great tier set, which is considered one of the strongest tank tier sets so far. The spec still possesses one of the best mob control across any tanking spec in Mythic+. They have incredibly high damage output, extremely high self-sustain, and are one of the most durable tanks so far on the PTR. We believe their current performance warrants S-tier.

Alternative-Best
Brewmaster Monk Brewmaster Monk

Brewmaster Monk received a significant rework leading up to Season 3, which has been focusing on improving their durability, self-sustain, and damage. Their performance is currently amazing, with significantly better mitigation and one of the highest damage outputs. We believe that Brewmaster monk is the perfect contender tank for the physical comps, which can further elevate their rankings due to the Mystic Touch Icon Mystic Touch value (it also got recently buffed from 5% to 8%. Further tuning will showcase their final placement for the tier list, but for now, they are currently performing better than ever on the PTR servers.

A
Protection Paladin Protection Paladin

Protection Paladin hasn't seen any significant change from their playstyle from the last season, apart from the introduction of their new tier-set. Although their damage profile is looking to be incredible, durability improvements are needed in order for them to climb the rankings, as it is their only issue for now. They have incredible mob control, one of the best 5-man utilities, and an immunity, which is a reason why the spec is so highly desired when properly tuned. If they receive their long-awaited durability buffs, I won't be surprised to see them in a commanding position.

B
Guardian Druid Guardian Druid

Guardian Druid received minor changes leading up to the next season, with the most significant one being their newly introduced tier set. Guardian's most recent nerf hit its durability and self-sustainability, which was its biggest asset in the previous week. We would like to see a slight positive adjustment on behalf of their damage before ranking them higher, as every other requirement is so far completed for them. At last, Druid has one of the strongest 5-man party buffs in the face of Mark of the Wild Icon Mark of the Wild, which holds immense value for the group. Once we get closer to the release of the season,n we will have much more accurate placement for Guardian, but given the nerfs last week, they will go down a place for now.

Blood Death Knight Blood Death Knight

Unfortunately, for Blood Death Knight there has mostly been negative changes, which will diminish their performance and likely move the tank towards the bottom half of the rankings. Most notable is their tier set, which doesn't offer as much power spike compared to its tank competition, and the removal of Abomination Limb Icon Abomination Limb, which will make stacking mobs much harder. Blood Death Knight is the only tank spec without a raid buff, further crippling them in a 5-man content. In addition, defensively and offensively are at a disadvantage compared to the top-ranked tanks, further pushing them down the list. Overall, it is too early to have a final estimate of how the spec will rank, Still, preliminary thoughts are that the spec performance will likely change by the time they make it to the live servers and positive changes will come their way (hopefully).
