Former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick explains why World of Warcrat’s subscription price remained unchanged for years.
Bobby discussed his approach to WoW’s subscription model on the Grit Podcast. Despite the game’s immense popularity and big player base, Kotick resisted increasing the monthly fee, even by a single dollar.
A “Prickly” Audience and the Best Subscription Model
During the interview, Kotick acknowledged that WoW’s $15 monthly subscription could have been raised, but he believed doing so would have been a mistake.
“We never raised the price,” Kotick said. “My view was we come up with value-added services, come up with new things to sell, but just leave the price. We could figure out how to come up with other things to sell then. And it’s a prickly audience, you know? You don’t wanna do too much to agitate them. And even a dollar increase would’ve been a problem in my view.”
150 Million Players Have Subscribed to WoW Over the Years
Kotick also revealed that over 150 million players have subscribed to WoW at some point in the game’s history.
“That’s a crazy number,” Kotick said. “Those are people paying $15 a month. It was the best subscription business of all time.“
