With yesterday’s joke/prank day out of the way (the highlights of which you can check out here), some players remembered that these things sometimes turn out to be much more than jokes!
F.O.O.L.S’
Crmyr remembered an old 2009 April Fools’ Day joke from Blizzard, as they showed off a garage where you could customize your mount! With a reference to the old Pimp My Ride tv show, this one became a reality three times! First off, we have the very similar Dragonriding customization screen that arrived in Dragonflight. Then there’s the even closer reality at The War Within’s launch when we literally got to customize a mechanical mount from the Delves. And finally, here in patch 11.1, we have the D.R.I.V.E. feature that’s a literal garage! All that’s missing is a F.L.Y. system so we can get this exact “joke” screen!
A Joke Becomes One of the Pillars of the Game
Believe it or not, item levels started as an April Fools’ joke! Well, sort of. This one’s also from 2009, and during that time, the addon GearScore was widely used to determine the quality of your gear. Well, Blizzard poked fun at it with their own joke system.

Very specific naming aside, this eventually did turn out to be true, in more ways than one, as we use item levels and Mythic+ score today!

Pandaren, Sort Of
Probably the most famous one, the Pandaren are a little weirder. Their April Fools’ joke isn’t from World of Warcraft at all. Instead, the joke came in 2002, where they were presented as the 5th race in Warcraft 3. Later on, they would make their appearance in the Frozen Throne expansion in 2003, becoming a reality pretty quickly (or was it just a tease?).

What other April Fools’ Day jokes would you want to become a reality?
