The 2016 Warcraft movie may have been a financial success globally, but the former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick had nothing positive to say about it. Despite earning $439.1 million worldwide, the film struggled in the U.S., bringing in only $47.4 million.
In a recent episode of the Grit podcast, Kotick made it clear that he thought the movie was a disaster. He called it one of the worst films he had ever seen and criticized its effect on Blizzard Entertainment, claiming it distracted the company from game development.
Blizzard Paid the Price for the Film
Kotick revealed that Blizzard’s Chris Metzen became burned out due to the movie’s production. He argued that resources were diverted away from core game development, leading to delays in expansions and updates for WoW. Kotick admitted that he tried to bring Metzen back to Blizzard in 2022, but the two haven’t stayed in touch.
