Hunting for rare mounts is many a player’s favorite pastime, especially for mounts that have abysmal drop rates. Sometimes those drop rates can turn into really horrific nightmares. We’re sure N’zoth would like them. We can even see this type of mount farming being turned into a horrific vision, RNG style. Oh, wait, never mind, Rei Lun already exists.
Onibyakuran starts us off, and at the time of writing, has 492 attempts at getting the coveted Pristine Cloud Serpent Scale from a rare in Pandaria, rounding the rarity to 100%. They had 99.99% at 450 tries.
N0thingMuch1 ups the ante and showcases that the longer a mount has existed, the more unlucky a player can get! Wrath of the Lich King’s Reins of the Blue Proto-Drake is the culprit here. With 781 attempts, and still no Drake, Skadi absolutely confirms his moniker as the Ruthless.
We hope these words of encouragement for the next attempt were fruitful.
Another painful RNG story comes from zakharenka, managing 827 attempts at The Jailer before nabbing the Fractal Cypher of the Zereth Overseer. The Jailer proves a tiresome opponent, just like much of the Shadowlands.
Speaking of the WoW afterlife, it seems to be a popular spot for some rare mount farming, unlike for everything else. Although we don’t know exactly how many attempts brokebackzac needed for their Vengeance’s Reins, we’ll take a guess that it wasn’t a few.
On the other hand, Wp254 is at 753 attempts, with 17 attempts a week. And probably still counting? Fingers crossed.
The elusive Great Sea Ray is a great fisherman’s tale even to this day. A mount that can be fished in the waters of Battle for Azeroth made plenty a fisherman lose their mind, needing tens of thousands of swings of the fishing rod to reel it in. You can buy it on the AH, but it apparently doesn’t give the achievement associated with it. Internal-Success2759 knows the feeling, and lived through the ordeal for the mount, and the shiny fishing story. Many are still sharing the shores of BfA with other crazed fishermen.
And to round off the nightmares of RNG is everyone’s favorite Lich King, and his mount, Invincible. Scary-Environment-82 lost track of how many attempts they did, and was convinced the mount doesn’t even exist. They ended up being so excited when it dropped that they must have forgotten print screen exists. SearchStack also has a somewhat far-fetched theory of when and why this mount drops. But considering how many attempts many have to make, we think it even sounds plausible.
Since we’ve lived through the gods of RNG, we’ll be sure to keep our fingers crossed for anyone trying their hand at some of the rarest mounts in WoW. And if you’ve got a nightmare of your own to tell, do share. There’s also plenty of opportunity to share the misery in the discussions already up there.
