Leveling 60 Alts to Help, Spending 29 Million on the BMAH: One Player’s 2.5-Year Journey from 500 to 900 Mounts

Leveling 60 new characters just to “help” with a particular endeavor in WoW is pretty extreme. Not to mention some insane gold spent on the Black Market Auction House. Luckily for us, ScienceNye shared their journey on how they managed to get from 517 mounts to nearly double that to 931, detailing their experience and tips for anyone with the same goal.

How the Journey Started

ScienceNye’s motivation to start their mount farming journey happened in June of 2022 because of the content drought that happened in Season 3 of Shadowlands. The starting point was chosen when they discovered Data for Azeroth and prepared a spreadsheet for planning their mount collecting journey. There were two tools that helped them a lot when starting their to-do list. The second is Simple Armory, which helps visualize what’s left to collect and organizes it nicely.

The Hardest Mounts to Farm

One of the hardest mounts to farm was the Swift Zulian Panther iconSwift Zulian Panther. ScienceNye was 1,200 kills deep before it finally appeared on the BMAH, where it was purchased to end the long grind. The Snapback Scuttler iconSnapback Scuttler from the Nazjatar Meta was another challenge, with one rare stubbornly refusing to spawn despite numerous attempts, until it finally appeared during a paragon reputation farm on their second alt. The Reins of the Grand Black War Mammoth iconReins of the Grand Black War Mammoth also provided difficult, dropping after around 900 kills, making it a statistically late drop (around 1% drop chance).

Additionally, Island Expeditions from BFA and Garrison Invasions were particularly frustrating, as they were time-consuming and yielded no mount drops in the garrison despite numerous attempts.

Farming Strategies

Let’s go through some of the strategies that helped them in their farming journey:

  • Leveling Alts: Leveling multiple alts to access class-exclusive mounts and complete class mount quests.
  • Rare Mob Camping: Parking alts at rare mob spawn points to farm mounts, ensuring these alts are at the required level.
  • Legacy Content: Regularly run older dungeons and raids for mount drops, often solo.
  • Staying Updated: Monitoring outside resources for updates on new mounts and soloable legacy content.
  • Focusing on Meta-Achievements: Working on Meta-Achievements that reward mounts, both solo and group-based.
  • Black Market Auction House: Parking an alt at the BMAH and bid on rare mounts.
  • Joining Group Farms: Participating in or creating groups for achievements and mounts that require multiple players.
  • Seasonal Bosses: Farming seasonal bosses with all available alts for mount drops, especially using tanks and healers for shorter queues.
  • Prioritizing Trading Post Mounts: Prioritizing purchasing mounts from the Trading Post and keeping a Tender reserve for multiple purchases.

Side Effects of Mount Farming

Mount farming led to several changes in ScienceNye’s gameplay and lifestyle. They leveled 60 alts to help with rare mob camping and dungeon entrances. This also led to an interest in Mythic Plus dungeons, earning Keystone Master iconKeystone Master for the last four seasons. To fund their 29 million gold spent on the Black Market Auction House, they learned gold-making through TSM and r/woweconomy. The experience also helped them find a better balance between gaming and personal life, organizing time for both gaming and everyday tasks like cleaning and exercise.

So if you you ever thought about seriously expanding your mount collection, be aware it might completely change how you play the game!
