Positioning, Mechanics and Group Survival: Very Useful Tips for M+ Dungeons From a Tank Perspective

Staff's Avatar by Staff

Mythic+ Season 2 is in full swing and it’s looking like one of the better ones. Players are pushing higher and higher keys and are going for those +10s and up. Luckily for them, Gangsir shared some of the most useful tips they’ve come across for M+ dungeons from a tank’s perspective. All the advice is aimed at +10 keys and above, and it’s straightforward – things like “mind this, it does a lot of damage.”

Let’s take a look at a few of the most played dungeons, with only Floodgate and Meadery excluded. You can find the rest in their full post here:

Priory of the Sacred Flame

On first miniboss (Suleyman):
The tank must position him against stairs or a wall to avoid getting knocked back by his Shield Bash, which can cause accidental pulls. If Suleyman is pulled into the open, the tank should quickly move to a nearby staircase before building threat. DPS should wait to attack until the tank is securely positioned, as the tank only has one taunt.

On sharpshooters:
They randomly jump to players, especially ranged, and drop traps that root and apply a heavy bleed. When they jump far from the group, they become hard to kill with cleave. To counter this, all players (including ranged) should stack on the tank so the sharpshooters land in the melee pack and can be cleaved down easily. Just be careful to avoid the traps.

On second and 4th miniboss:
These will run to where the previous miniboss died when they spawn. This is announced by Dailcry with a voice line. Avoid fighting tough enemies near those spots, or the new miniboss might jump in mid-fight. The tank should watch for their arrival and be ready to taunt before they start hitting random DPS.

Mechagon

On junkyard dogs:
They deal damage to random players. Avoid pulling the whole room near Kujo at once – while it’s tempting, in higher keys, healers can usually only handle 3-4 at a time safely.

On Kujo:
After each Heat Wave, move away from the current red box so the next one doesn’t drop too close – old boxes explode with an invisible AoE. During Heat Waves, don’t try to squeeze in damage; just hide behind the box. Ignore any weakauras claiming it’s safe – they’re unreliable and will get you killed. Playing it safe is better than dying for a bit of uptime.

On gunk:
CC them to prevent them from casting corrosive gunk during the drill’s AOE damage. Any sort of stun, disorient, fear, etc. works. Your healer will thank you.

On trinketers:
They constantly cast Giga-wallop and do nothing else – they don’t move or auto-attack. The spell hits random players for heavy damage, so it’s crucial to interrupt them on cooldown. If left unchecked, they can easily kill players in higher keys.

On shield generators:
Dropped by Mechagon Defenders, provide strong damage reduction and are especially helpful during Short-Out AoE. Players should stand in them when possible to ease healing. However, tanks must move enemies out of the shield, and abilities like Ring of Peace (Monks) or Wing Buffet (Evokers) can help displace enemies if needed.

Darkflame Cleft

On second boss (Blazikon):
Light all candles and bait tornadoes to extinguish exactly one – too few or too many means instant death. Dodge tornadoes after they hit a candle. The tank must stay in melee range at all times and ignore candle mechanics.

On third boss (Candle King):
Stay stacked so wax statues spawn nearby and are easier to melt. Unmelted statues cause increasing AoE damage. Interrupt Paranoid Mind using a rotation – two players are needed since it casts twice per interrupt cooldown. Call interrupts to avoid overlap.

On fourth boss (Darkness):
Decide who’s moving the candle during the frontal – usually a DPS, not the healer. Before AoE, someone should grab a fresh candle and wait outside. During the AoE, they re-enter to refresh the light. Never let candlelight hit 0% – it causes a fear and a permanent damage taken debuff that will lead to deaths.
