Blizzard unleashed a bunch of great stuff for the Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct yesterday. To say player housing coming in the next expansion for WoW, Midnight, caused the largest hype would be an understatement.
Cautious Optimism
Comments for that are pretty ecstatic, but some do err on the side of caution about the possibility of monetization with custom furniture in the in-game shop. The hype is still very much present overall though.
- OMG YES, now have all the zones include new drops for furniture. New crack on the block.
- Player housing is 100% pure video game crack for me. “Run this dungeon 14 times for a cool decoration”? Don’t mind if I do.
- Please god give us a woodworking profession so I can go full Animal Crossing and make furniture to sell to people
- 100% they are going to monetize the in-game shop with customized furnishings and designs. Think Sims expansions but for WoW.
- I’m concerned they are going to dump a lot of it into the trading post or the real money store.
And one player keeping it very real and seeing the true meaning of the feature, as piterisonfire nails it:
The Mists of Pandaria Classic announcement is also causing quite a stir. Players are joking that Classic is getting ever closer to the maligned Shadowlands, and there are even hopes Blizzard stops updating after Legion. There are also some concerns about Classic losing its appeal compared to Retail, since it’s getting closer to the same features.
The third biggest hype train seems to be patch 11.1 with the focus on Undermine, and the new Liberation of Undermine raid. Many players seem to be overjoyed with a major content patch focusing on the Goblins, since they, along with Gnomes who got a spotlight in Mechagon, usually serve as comic relief and joke punchline races. Also, lots of players want to smack Bobby Gallywix in the face.
The Memes
A few quality memes and are also popping up, like this returning player’s view on the whole housing situation.
It remains to be seen just how close housing will be to the Garrison.
Then we have a meditation on the many, many versions of the game coming up and how exactly to handle them. They even missed Plunderstorm!
And then there’s this wry comment on the Classic remixing, as even Bethesda didn’t get left out of the fun.
In the same vein we have the very obvious, but had to be said comment as well:
And in closing, a solid summary of the community reaction after every announcement when the initial hyped dies down (AKA a few hours after the stream):
In spite of all the jokes, some worried comments, and some usual naysayers, the hype is still strong overall for the future of WoW, even for the Classic version. You can also check all the other announcements in our Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct Summary and News Hub.
