Will There Ever Be a World of Warcraft 2? Game Director Ion Hazzikostas Shares His Thoughts

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Senior Game Director Ion Hazzikostas discussed the future of World of Warcraft and whether the popular MMORPG might ever see a full reset or a sequel. After nearly two decades of expansions and updates, players have wondered if Blizzard might eventually take a page from games like Overwatch 2 or Counter Strike 2 and create a true follow-up.

“Theoretically, at some long distant point down the line, that may be a question we grapple with seriously,” Hazzikostas said. “But, for the time being, we have a huge, vibrant, and growing player community that we’re excited to serve.”

World of Warcraft’s Constant Evolution

Hazzikostas emphasized that World of Warcraft has essentially been rebuilt piece by piece over the years, comparing it to the Ship of Theseus, a philosophical concept about objects undergoing change while retaining their identity.

“We’re constantly tearing out some old foundation system and replacing it with something that will scale to support our new server architecture, to support new graphics pipelines, to support new aspects of multiplayer interaction that the original game couldn’t have imagined,” he explained.

According to Hazzikostas, Blizzard’s priority remains focused on serving its current player base by continuing to evolve the game. “When we have this vibrant world full of millions of players, our priority is to keep serving them as best we can, to keep extending those journeys, the worlds we build, and every step along the way, we are making the improvements that we think suit the modern audience best.”
