Odyn Strategy/Tactics for Normal/Heroic
Table of Contents
General Information
On this page, you will find a working strategy to defeat Odyn in Trial of Valor for both Normal and Heroic modes, which usually only differ by the tuning of the boss.
Here, we assume that you have read our descriptions of the abilities for this encounter.
The other pages of our Odyn guide can be accessed from the table of contents on the right.

Phase One
The goal of Phase One is to bring both Hymdall and Hyrja down to 25% in the same
10-second widow. Failing to do that will cause them to heal back to 50% with
Revivify.
Positioning
The most important things in this Phase is to tank Hymdall and Hyrja 35 yards apart
(because of Valarjar's Bond) and have all melee players on Hyrja (Hymdall
uses
Horn of Valor, which causes melee players to often have to move out).
An easy way to positioning Hyrja and Hymdall is to simply have them on the runes on the floor
next to which they spawn. This is just slightly more than 35 yards.
In addition, raid members should spread out 8 yards. It will help
deal with both Expel Light and raid-wide damage component of
Horn of Valor.
Other than this, raid members should move out of Dancing Blade
and position themselves in the line between the boss and the targeted raid
member when Shield of Light is cast.
Draw Power
When Draw Power is cast, the 5 raid members on which the
Valarjar Runebearers fixate have to move the corresponding rune, so that
their Runebearer can be attacked and killed (once the Runebearer is in the rune,
anyone can attack him, not just the fixated player).
Tank Concerns
The only real tank concern is for Hymdall's tank to move out
of Horn of Valor's area of effect when it is cast.
Healer Concerns
The main healing concerns in this phase are Shield of Light and
Unerring Blast.
If handled properly, Shield of Light can easily be healed through, but if too few players move in to soak the damage, the targeted player and the few soakers will take a large amount of damage.
The damage from Unerring Blast can easily get out of hand if the
raid fails to kill one or more Valarjar Runebearers.
Phase Two
Phase Two is very simple. What this means is that the strategy is very simple, because there are very few new abilities. It does not mean that the tuning of the fight makes it easy.
Draw Power is still used in this Phase and should be handled in
the same way as in Phase One and is still a concern for healers is
Runebearers are not killed in time.
Odyn's Test requires a tank switch. The tank should quickly get a feel of how
quickly they should switch. Start swapping at 6 to 8 stacks, see how it feels, and
then adjust if necessary.
Players should move out of Spear of Light's swirling ground effect
and be careful to avoid the
Glowing Fragments that move
outwards after the spear has been shattered. Healers also need to pay attention
to the raid-wide damage that the spear deals when it shatters.
Heroic Mode: Dealing with Hymdall and Hyrja
In Heroic Mode, when Hymdall or Hyrja jumps down, the raid should focus them down as hard
as possible. This is because one of the tanks will be on Hymdall or Hyrja,
which means the other tank will be alone on Odyn, taking increasingly high
damage due to Odyn's Test. So it is important that Hymdall or Hyrja
dies quickly, so that Odyn's tank can be relieved before dying.
Other than that, Horn of Valor is still very dangerous and is the
main concern when Hymdall is down.
Phase Three
During Phase Three, part of the room is always unavoidable to the raid
because it is covered in Cleansing Flame. It is important to tank
Odyn in the middle of the space that remains. This way, players
can move out when targeted by
Storm of Justice and leave their
Raging Tempest tornadoes at the edge of the available space.
Similarly, having Odyn in the middle allows the tank targeted by
Stormforged Spear to run out and take reduced damage from
it.
For healers, the main concern is Stormforged Spear, because it does
raid-wide damage and at the same time a high amount of damage to the targeted
tank.
Arcing Storm sounds scary on paper, because of its increasing
damage, but in reality, the damage remains much lower than that of Stormforged
Spear.
Bloodlust/Heroism/Time Warp
We advise you to use Bloodlust /
Heroism /
Time Warp at the beginning of Phase Three, as it is the hardest phase.
That said, it is possible to use it during Phase 2 when Hymjall or Hyrja is up,
if you feel that keeping Odyn's tank alive is going to be difficult (if there
are too few healing or tank cooldowns available, for example).
