Patch 8.3 Assaults Guide (BfA 8.3)
Assaults are new 8.3 patch content coming with Patch 8.3 that require players to contest various invasions on Uldum and the Valley of Eternal Blossoms, both by N'Zoth and other hostile forces. By doing these assaults you will be able to gather keys to Horrific Visions which allow you to obtain and upgrade your legendary cloak.
What are Assaults?
Assaults are a new type of zone event in Patch 8.3 and are unlocked through the initial patch quest line. You can find them in Uldum and the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
N'Zoth will be assaulting one of these zones throughout the whole week, causing it to have the Ny'alotha raid entrance, while the other zone rotates between different types of non-N'Zoth assaults and contains a World Boss. You can discover which kind of event is happening by mousing over the eye on your world map.
You will see a type of non-N'Zoth assault after the weekly reset and a different one 3 days and 12 hours afterwards, which means the assaults change every Friday at 19:00 Pacific Time for US realms and every Saturday, 21:00 Central European Time for EU realms.
Assault Mechanics and Goals
Each assault has a number of daily quests, events and rares that you can take down for minor Coalescing Visions and Corrupted Mementos amounts, but your main goal is to fill a progress bar within the assault area by killing enemies and clicking things, followed by killing a boss in the area and returning to the quest hub to report your victory.
In the zone under direct assault by N'Zoth, you can also find the Lesser Visions obelisk, which can be completed daily for more rewards. Learn more about these visions in our specialized guide below.
You can also do multiple events across the zone that award a small amount of reputation and other rewards. While these events are not marked on your world map until you get close, you can find them easily by using HandyNotes: Visions of N'Zoth, which will mark them up on the map for you.
Flying is enabled in the Assault zones, but you should be wary of flying too high or going AFK in the sky, as there will be Great Worms From Beyond in the skies of assault areas who will slow your flying speed to a crawl if you come anywhere close to them, or even one shot you, should you run into them.
Assault Types
There are three types of assaults for each zone, one carried out by N'Zoth himself (The Black Empire), another carried out by his allies (Aqir and Mantid) and a final one carried out by third parties (Amathet and Mogu) who are not necessarily aligned with N'Zoth, but are our enemies regardless.
The Black Empire Assault (Uldum, Kalimdor)
As the veil between worlds fades, N’Zoth’s servants will infiltrate Uldum. Purify the desert sands of his ancient corruption.
N'Zoth the Corruptor was unleashed on Azeroth at the end of 8.2's raid, Eternal Palace. These assaults represent his corrupting influence in the world, and you will be able to find Ny'alotha itself in the center of the zone, as well as a lesser vision of what is to come for this zone, should N'Zoth win.
Aqir Assault (Uldum, Kalimdor)
The Aqir plagues Uldum and threatens to obliterate the region’s titan facilities in the name of N’Zoth and the Black Empire. Crush their uprising to put an end to their mindless destruction.
This insectoid race originated from the organic matter of the Old Gods themselves. Controlled by a Hive Mind, they represent a major danger to all uncorrupted inhabitants of Azeroth.
Amathet Assault (Uldum, Kalimdor)
Weaponizing their position as stewards of the titans, the zealous Amathet have taken control of Uldum to help secure their place as the sole controllers of the titanic forge. Sweep this arrogant tribe back into the sandy tombs from which they emerged.
As explained above, the Amathet are a new tol'vir faction who, instead of working with us to stop N'Zoth, would rather reset Azeroth itself, killing us all in the process. Naturally, we will be stopping their plans here.
The Black Empire Assault (Vale of Eternal Blossoms, Pandaria)
The restored Vale of Eternal Blossoms is once again threatened by the Old Gods. Drive back the madness of the Black Empire’s fleet to restore harmony.
Just as it happened in the last patch of Mists of Pandaria, when Garrosh Hellscream unleashed the heart of Y'shaarj and tainted the Vale of Eternal Blossoms in the process, this zone is again under attack by an Old God, in a more personal fashion this time.
Mantid Assault (Vale of Eternal Blossoms, Pandaria)
The peaceful lands of Pandaria are under siege from the mantid swarm once again. Squash Shek’zara’s insectoid servants to foil the hivemind’s plans.
As we learned in the final quest for the Klaxxi faction back in Mists of Pandaria, the Mantid serve the Old Gods. As N'Zoth rises, so do they, looking to finish the battles started long ago.
Mogu Assault (Vale of Eternal Blossoms, Pandaria)
The warring clans of the Mogu over the Vale are surging to a breaking point, leaving devastation in their wake. Beat back their forces to put all sides this proud race on their knees.
While we keep beating the Mogu back whenever they assault, they seem to continue coming back. This patch is no exception, and the chaos brought by the resurgence of N'Zoth is the perfect cover for a renewed assault on the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
Rewards from Assaults
Completing a Black Empire Assault (once per week) rewards a Vessel of Horrific Visions, 2500 Coalescing Visions and 1500 reputation with the zone's allied faction, 2000 gold, 750 artifact power, 120 Corrupted Mementos and a (likely to be corrupted) piece of gear which scales up to item level 445 (for Azerite gear), depending on your average item level.
Completing the other assaults (once in the first half and once in the second half of the weekly WoW reset) rewards 6500 Coalescing Visions and 500 reputation with the zone's allied faction, 2000 gold, 500 artifact power, 50 Corrupted Mementos and a (likely to be corrupted) piece of gear which scales up to item level 445 (for Azerite gear), depending on your average item level.
Both of these will also award Echoes of Ny'alotha, which are used to speed up end-game progression. You can learn all about this new system in our specialized guide for Echoes of Ny'alotha below.
Also worth mentioning is that you can loot relic fragments such as Voidwarped Relic Fragment from enemies in Assaults, which when combined into a key (like Cursed Relic), can be used to open special chests in the assault zone that award 125 Corrupted Mementos and 500 Coalescing Visions.
You can get extra reputation and other rewards by doing the zone dailies and pet battles, as well. Also, make sure to drop by the Lesser Vision Obelisk in the Black Empire assault zone once per day to collect its rewards.
Assaults Essences
There are 3 Essences that can be obtained from the Assaults (one for each role): Breath of the Dying (DPS), Spirit of Preservation (Healer) and Touch of the Everlasting (Tank).
You can find more information on these essences in our 8.3 Essence guide:
Void Focus
The Void Focus is a new item required to craft high level bind on pickup equipment in patch 8.3. You can get Recipe: Void Focus while doing Assaults, followed by looting 10 Void Focus Splinters from various Assaults enemies and crafting the item itself.
This will prompt you to return to the Chamber of the Heart in Silithus, where you will activate an item on the ground that enables you to craft 440 — 470 item level gear, depending on your profession choices.
Check out all the details in Stan's article about it:
Black Empire Catch-up Gear
While doing Assaults, it is very likely that some Black Empire bind on account tokens will drop. These convert into item level 415 Azerite gear and 410 gear for the remaining slots and look like Raid Finder Ny'alotha armor.
These are meant to be sent to alts in order to help them gear much faster, in order to be ready to do 8.3 content. You can find how the gear looks and more details on each token here:
