Hero Talents for Protection Warrior

Mountain Thane and Colossus bring their own strengths and weaknesses to Raiding and Mythic+. They are both designed very differently, which provides some much-needed freshness to the class.

For Raiding, Mountain Thane and Colossus are both valid choices. Mountain Thane is the safer option, thanks to the extra Rage generation, while Colossus can potentially be the more offensive choice with specific talents.

For Mythic+, Colossus is the winner. The constant damage it brings to the table and the burst damage with Demolish Icon Demolish make it great in Mythic+. It does require more thought about when and where to spend your Rage, but once you get the hang of it, it will pay off. Mountain Thane is a solid alternative to Mythic+, it does not bring as much damage to the table, but it makes up for it defensiveness.

Raiding and Mythic+ Hero Talents as Protection Warrior

As Mountain Thane, the Hero Talents focus on amplifying your already existing abilities. The most noticeable one is turning Thunder Clap Icon Thunder Clap into Thunder Blast Icon Thunder Blast. The strength, and why the tree is better designed for ProtectionWarriors, is how the talents themselves interact with each other.

  • Burst of Power Icon Burst of Power allows Lightning Strikes Icon Lightning Strikes to proc Shield Slam Icon Shield Slam;
  • Strategist Icon Strategist can proc Shield Slam Icon Shield Slam;
  • Shield Slam Icon Shield Slam can proc Thunder Blast Icon Thunder Blast;
  • Thunder Blast Icon Thunder Blast can proc Lightning Strikes Icon Lightning Strikes thanks to Flashing Skies Icon Flashing Skies;

As shown in the list above, the whole tree creates a positive Rage feedback loop while maintaining our rotational fluidness. The better Rage economy is what mainly sets Mountain Thane and Colossus apart.

2.1.

Raiding and Mythic+ as Mountain Thane

Mountain Thane is a solid middle-ground choice for raiding and Mythic+. While the damage output it provides might be slightly smaller than what Colossus brings to the table, it makes up for it by being a defensively better option.

Thunder Blast Icon Thunder Blast deals a lot of damage, regardless of the target count, while also generating Rage. Gaining 2 Thunder Blast Icon Thunder Blast procs each time we use Avatar Icon Avatar guarantees predictable burst windows on a fairly short cooldown, thanks to Anger Management Icon Anger Management. Mountain Thane's heavy emphasis on Shield Slam Icon Shield Slam and Thunder Clap Icon Thunder Clap also means that our whole rotation feels a lot smoother and faster.

Colossus, similarly to Mountain Thane, has one build which works well everywhere. The One Against Many Icon One Against Many / Arterial Bleed Icon Arterial Bleed choice node is the only one you will change depending on the content. One Against Many Icon One Against Many should be used in AoE / Mythic+, while Arterial Bleed Icon Arterial Bleed should be used in Raid / ST scenarios.

Using Demolish Icon Demolish is straightforward; just use it on cooldown. It will align with your other damage amps, like Avatar Icon Avatar and Demoralizing Shout Icon Demoralizing Shout (with Booming Voice Icon Booming Voice) more or less naturally.

2.2.

Raiding and Mythic+ as Colossus

Colossus is a more offensive choice compared to Mountain Thane. It can deal a lot more damage, but this damage output comes potentially at the cost of defensive value.

The tree revolves around Demolish Icon Demolish and amping the damage of your bleeds and Revenge Icon Revenge. Unfortunately, Demolish does not provide any Rage generation. This means that you need to make tougher choices between using Rage on Ignore Pain Icon Ignore Pain and Revenge Icon Revenge. This choice is made even harder because a big part of your AoE damage output will come from Revenge Icon Revenge, meaning that in order to deal maximum amounts of of damage, you need to actively use it as much as possible. Forgoing usage of Ignore Pain Icon Ignore Pain means that your damage intake will be higher, so striking a balance between the two is crucial.
