Templar is slightly stronger Herald of the Sun on overall damage. It does struggle a little more with downtime, but it is a stronger overall Hero Tree due to the mid-season buffs it received.

Herald of the Sun is a decent overall choice and can still perform solidly in all situations, but tends to do better in situations with multiple targets.

Templar now has strong options for both single-target and AoE damage thanks to buffs to its most powerful damage effects.

Herald of the Sun has strong sustained cleave damage but will generally perform worse on single-target and for burst damage than Templar.

Herald of the Sun's talents do not change with different content types for PvE, as there is a clear best option for each choice node.

Templar requires you to use Hammer of Light during your cooldowns when it becomes available after using Wake of Ashes. You will also periodically get to use it for free too. Other than this, there are no other specific considerations you need to make to play Templar.

Herald of the Sun is an almost entirely passive tree. You will occasionally gain buffs that give you extra casts of some abilities which will require you to prioritize spending the procs, like Blessing of An'she.
