On this page, you will find out the best talents for each tier for your Unholy Death Knight in World of Warcraft — The War Within (11.1.0). We also have default talent lists for various types of content, such as raiding or Mythic+. If you play with Warmode on, we have your PvP talents covered as well.

Note that these builds are generic recommendations for various content. For more specific recommendations for the Raid and Mythic+, check out the dedicated pages below.
Best Talents for Unholy Death Knight
Best Raid Talents for Unholy Death Knight
This build is optimal for your pure Single Target DPS in our BiS gear. It runs
the San'layn Hero Talents and has both the best Single Target, as well
as the best cleave. Importantly though, it needs the season 2 4-set before it
becomes better than the Rider build.
Your primary choice in the spec tree revolves around Superstrain.
You can opt to go down this path to gain significant AoE potential, while
losing around 2% Single Target DPS (depending on gear). In most situations, you
will do this as you gain so much value from the extra cleave and AoE damage.
For the class tree, there's quite a lot more realistic choice. We have opted to
pick Mind Freeze by default to reduce the risk of forgetting such a vital
talent when it is needed.
Death's Reach is a good situational talent
that works really well on bosses where the extra grip range is useful.
March of Darkness does not provide too much value due to
Death Charge
being so powerful and can easily be swapped out to something else, if you are looking for
a talent to free up!
Be sure to make use of the 'Copy Export String' button to import the best build directly into your game!
The recommended talents do not account for specific raid encounters (but you can just run it everywhere and be completely fine), which can require a specific talent or build. For a boss-by-boss breakdown of the talent choices for specific encounters, you should check out our dedicated raid page.
Best Rider Raid Talents for Unholy Death Knight
This build is your alternative raid build used for pure Single Target fights.
It is slightly behind the San'Layn build but makes up for it by being far more flexible
when it comes to downtime. Whenever you risk dropping your Essence of the Blood Queen
buff with San'Layn due to boss mechanics, consider this build instead. Furthermore,
until we get the new tier set this will be the best Single Target build as well.
Within the Rider of the Apocalypse tree, there are three choice nodes.
Two utility ones and one DPS. For the DPS node,
Fury of the Horsemen
wins out in all situations. The horsemen themselves deal a great deal of damage,
and extending their duration helps to boost this damage significantly. For the
utility nodes, we pick
Death Charge due to
On a Paler Horse not working
in a raiding environment. Finally,
Horsemen's Aid is great for any
encounter with magic damage and magical debuffs vs
Pact of the Apocalypse
which is more about raw defensive gain.
This tree is generally our "fits-all" talent tree. We can choose to pick up
some more AoE potential by swapping Ghoulish Frenzy to
Ebon Fever or
Menacing Magus.
However, any further changes quickly reduces our Single Target by 5%+ which generally
is not worthwhile.
The bottom part of the tree has a lot less choice. Blood Draw can be
exchanged for
Runic Protection on fights with a lot of physical damage intake.
Furthermore, where you simply do not take any magic damage at all,
Null Magic
can be allocated to
Osmosis or some place further up the tree.
Mythic+ San'Layn Talents for Unholy Death Knight
Our go-to Mythic+ build runs San'layn and deals incredible AoE damage.
It scales extremely well with target count, as well as doing will on cleave with
the big
Death Coil cleave.
The choice in the spec tree primarily revolves around Apocalypse
and whether or not we pick up this talent. It is quite a heavy commitment since
we also need to spend two points in
Improved Festering Strike which
really is not a good talent. It is a 10% Single Target gain to go to Apocalypse
but you lose quite a lot of AoE. The default build is the no-apoc build as it is
the most straightforward to play and has a huge amount of AoE. If you want
to pick Apocalypse, swap out
Pestilence and
Ghoulish Frenzy.
For the class tree, we are pretty locked for the most part. Both
Blinding Sleet and
Mind Freeze are mandatory, along with
Cleaving Strikes.
Anti-Magic Zone and
March of Darkness
can be freed up.
Coldthirst,
Grip of the Dead and
Wraith Walk are good options.
Be sure to make use of the 'Copy Export String' button to import the best build directly into your game!
Mythic+ Rider Talents for Unholy Death Knight
This is your go-to Rider Mythic+ build for all dungeons and affixes. It
leverages both disease damage via Superstrain,
Ebon Fever, and
Plaguebringer, as well as Wounds damage with
Bursting Sores.
Death Charge due to
On a Paler Horse not working
in a Mythic+ environment. Furthermore, we pick
Pact of the Apocalypse for
the raw defensive gain.
The primary choice in the spec tree revolves around Menacing Magus.
You can change this talent for
Improved Death Coil for better 2-target cleave
or
Vile Contagion/
Pestilence for better big AoE burst.
Vile Contagion generates more
Festering Wounds but requires more
setup.
Pestilence is just passive and easy to play, also reduces setup!
For the class tree, we are pretty locked for the most part. Both
Blinding Sleet and
Mind Freeze are essentially mandatory, along with
Cleaving Strikes.
Anti-Magic Zone and
March of Darkness
can be freed up.
Coldthirst,
Grip of the Dead and
Wraith Walk are good options.
Be sure to make use of the 'Copy Export String' button to import the best build directly into your game!
Leveling Talents for Unholy Death Knight
When leveling, we prioritise slightly differently compared to our other builds.
We want direct up-front damage without any setup, as well as good multi-dot
capabilities. Furthermore, mobility matters a lot, which is why we want
to pick up On a Paler Horse!
Delves Build for Unholy Death Knight
Delves generally does not have the same fight length as Mythic+ content. We, therefore, use a build which requires less setup to start dealing damage!
Hero Talents
Rider of the Apocalypse
The Rider of the Apocalypse Hero Talents focus on minion damage,
summoning Horsemen due deal heavy damage to your enemies. You have minor rotational
updates with Trollbane's Chains of Ice, where you want to burst them ASAP.
Otherwise, the main benefit comes from
Death Charge which is an amazing
mobility ability for Death Knights!
San'Layn
The San'layn Hero Talents focus heavily on DoT and
Death Coil damage. Furthermore, your rotation is completely
different in
Dark Transformation windows where you drop
Festering Strike
entirely. Its strength lies in two-target cleave where the
Death Coil damage
boost in conjunction with
Improved Death Coil works really well.

Rotation
Talents can and usually do change your rotation or add new abilities to your priority. For a more detailed breakdown of how your rotation will look with optimal talents, check out our rotation page, which is linked below.
PvP Talents (War Mode)
In this section, we will rank the PvP talents that are best for leveling and doing open-world content.
- PvP talents enabled in the outdoor world.
- 10% increase in World Quest rewards at maximum level.
- 10% more experience gained while leveling.
- Earn Conquest Points, which can reward gear every week.
With the benefits of enabling War Mode for leveling and PvE content, it is recommended enabling the feature to maximize your leveling and rewards at maximum level. However, you will make yourself available for open-world PvP, and the possibility of being "ganked" while leveling or doing World Quests exists.
Unholy Death Knight War Mode Talents
Doomburst causes your
Death Coils that consume
Sudden Doom to burst up to 2
Festering Wounds on the target, slowing them by 45% per wound burst for 3 seconds. Solid DPS gain in PvE.
Bloodforged Armor provides 3 seconds of 20% physical damage reduction whenever you press
Death Strike. Solid defensive gain!
Spellwarden lowers the cooldown of
Anti-Magic Shell by 10 seconds and allows you to use it on allies. It's just a nice defensive gain because it allows more AMS usage.
Reanimation reanimates a nearby corpse, summoning a zombie with 5 health for 20 seconds, which slowly moves towards the target. If it reaches your target, it explodes, stunning all enemies within 6 yards for 3 seconds and dealing 10% of the enemy's health in Shadow damage. This ability costs 1 Rune. This can be a powerful talent for both open-world questing and leveling; however, it is difficult to use in World PvP.
Dark Simulacrum places a debuff on your enemy, activating when they cast a spell that uses mana. It allows you to use that same spell for some time. Not useful in PvE content.
Necromancer's Bargain reduces the cooldown of your of your Apocalypse by 15 seconds; however, your Apocalypse does not summon ghouls but instead applies Crypt Fever to the target. Crypt fever deals up to 8% of the target's maximum health as Shadow damage over 4 seconds. Healing spells cast on the target refresh the duration of Crypt Fever. This is a strong choice for World PvP.
Rot and Wither adds an absorption shield to any target hit by
Death and Decay for 100% of the damage amount. Useless pretty much.
Necrotic Wound your
Festering Wounds now apply a healing absorption when they burst, absorbing a stacking 5% of healing for 15 seconds. Good for PvP but not usable in PvE content.
Strangulate silences your target for 4 seconds. Inferior to just running
Asphyxiate (it replaces the talent) and a pretty useless talent.
Doomburst is a solid choice due to its
nice DPS gain, helping you to consume
Festering Wounds. No other talent
does much for us in PvE, and are primarily PvP choices. For a second and third option,
we don't have much to choose from.
Bloodforged Armor is generally
best due to providing a good defensive gain, and
Spellwarden is a small
defensive gain!
