Allocation of Skill Points

With the new Skill Tree design, each Skill has Side Upgrades, Form Options, and Variations. Form Options do not cost Skill Points.

The new Skill Tree setup unlocks in stages, permanently opening new sections for allocation. For example, Companion Skills unlock at level 8. From level 8, you could remove all previous skill points you have invested before that, and start from the Companion Skills area. Take note of when points are removed and shuffled around!

Bonus Skill Ranks from Journey or Renown do not affect these unlocks. Excess points can be placed in available ranks, such as Lightning StormLightning Storm.

This table outlines the recommended Skill Point progression. 69 Points are gained from leveling. The remaining 14 points are gained from completing Renown (Eternal) and Seasonal Journey (Seasonal), for a total of 83 Skill Points.

Gear, Stats, Gems, and Runes

Check these sections for important Lightning Storm gearing considerations to improve the power of your character while leveling.

Legendary Aspects

All Salvaged Legendary Powers will update within your Codex of Power. Legendary Items with Aspect powers can be found across all content in Diablo 4. Randomly dropped Legendary Aspects can have a specific range of power on them. For example, Aspect of Inner CalmAspect of Inner Calm can roll between 50-75% for the effect. Salvaging a higher rank will improve the Aspect’s rank within your Codex from then on. Aspects gained from finishing dungeons will always be Rank 1.

In general, Aspects are generic conditional multipliers, small utility, heavy defense, or quality of life improvements, rather than required to make the build function, so builds will not be restricted by not having a certain aspect unlocked. This is a big improvement over previous versions, where some builds could not function without a random drop legendary aspect.

Here are the high-value Legendary Aspects to look out for with the Lightning Storm Druid:

Offensive Aspects

Defensive Aspects

Utility Aspects

  • Great Storm AspectGreat Storm Aspect – Lucky Hit: Lightning Damage has up to a 15% chance to grant a stack of Ferocity. You gain 10-15% Damage Reduction while you have Ferocity.
  • Overcharged AspectOvercharged Aspect – Your Storm Skills make enemies Vulnerable for 4 seconds. You deal 15-20% increased damage to Vulnerable enemies.

Mobility Aspects

  • Ghostwalker AspectGhostwalker Aspect – When Unstoppable and for 4 seconds after, you gain 10-20% increased Movement Speed and are Unhindered.
  • Aspect of SlaughterAspect of Slaughter – You gain 30-45% increased Movement Speed. Taking damage from Close enemies Slows you by 30% for 2 seconds.

Resource Aspects

  • Balanced AspectBalanced Aspect – Your Maximum Spirit is increased by 50. Casting a Skill with a Cooldown increases Spirit Generation by 20-35 for 8 seconds.
  • Aspect of AdaptabilityAspect of Adaptability – Basic Skills generate 15-25 additional Primary Resource, once per Skill.

Druids can adjust to what drops or to playstyles they enjoy when they level. See what flex choices are available in the Druids Have Options! section.

In general, Spirit Generation will help you keep casting Lightning StormLightning Storm without Basic Attack fillers or investment into Resource Aspects.

Weapon Damage and Damage Multipliers are heavy gear affixes that greatly scale their conditional damage.

Tempering manuals are found across Sanctuary. The Blacksmith applies Tempering affixes to items. Manuals are divided by types; a Resource manual like Worldly StabilityWorldly Stability has Resource type tempers, and can only be placed on rings and an amulet.

Here’s a list of Useful tempers to look out for, sorted by type.

Defensive Tempers are strong while leveling, giving large amounts of Maximum Life.

Our endgame builds are designed for gameplay after level 70, including interactions and systems found in Torment difficulty and beyond. Check the Druid Builds page to progress your character further.

Uniques

Here are some Uniques to look out for while leveling:

Gems and Runewords

Socket these Gems and Runewords into your Gear:

Gems

  • Weapon: TopazTopaz for Lightning Damage Multiplier.
  • Armor: SapphireSapphire for Willpower.
  • Jewelry: DiamondDiamonds for All Resistances.

Runewords

Runewords are a flexible power to help strengthen a build or fill its weaknesses. Two Runes combine for the total Runeword effect:

  • A conditional trigger Rune of Ritual that supplies Offerings when the condition is met
  • An effect Rune of Invocation that costs Offerings.

Once the Rune of Ritual has supplied enough Offerings, the Rune of Invocation will trigger its effect. Runes of Invocation will have overflow effects, where excess Offerings will spillover to empower the triggered effect.

Runewords replace Gems in gear. Up to two sets of Runeword pairs can be placed at a time. Runeword combinations are placed within 2 sockets of the same item, e.g., Helm, Chest, Pants, or 2-handed Weapon.

The following are Runeword combinations for the Lightning Storm Leveling Druid. These leveling recommendations are limited to Magic and Rare quality runes, and are placed in Armor slots:

Runeword CombinationRuneword Effects
Nagu CehNaguNagu – Gain: 100 Offering. Maintain at least 1 Active Summon for 5 seconds, gaining Offering for each up to 5 seconds.
CehCeh – Requires: 100 Offering. Overflow: 100 Offering. Cooldown: 1 second. Summon a Spirit Wolf Companion to attack enemies for 8 seconds.
Poc GarPocPoc – Gain: 5 Offering. Spend 5% of your Maximum Resource.
GarGar – Requires 25 Offering. Overflow: Gain Multiple Stacks. Gain 2% Critical Strike Chance for 5 seconds, up to 10%.

CehCeh will summon Spirit Wolves to deal moderate damage, apply Vulnerable, Chill, and Freeze to enemies, and they are good boys. GarGar will be a small boost to Critical Strike Chance.

Other triggers, such as CirCir and NeoNeo, will be usable, and other powers like QuaQua or KelKel can improve speed and quality of life as you level.

There will be several Runeword combinations that help out and work; feel free to try them all out as you acquire the runes.

Talisman

Lord of Hatred introduces Talisman sets. The Talisman is a Seal and the Charms placed within. Charms have general affixes from a limited pool and can have Set bonuses, which grant significant power.

You will receive a Seal and Charm early in Lord of Hatred Campaign. While leveling, magic, rare, and generic set charms can drop. After unlocking Torment levels, Druid Set Talismans and Ancestral level seals will begin to drop.

Seals and Charms come with some gear affixes, and seals also have a conditional bonus if you match their desired Set placement.

Some of the better affixes for the Seal, Seal Bonuses, and Charms include the following:

  • Ranks to Shapeshifting, Core, Storm, or Nature Magic Skills
  • All Stats
  • Armor or Max Life
  • Critical Strike Chance
  • Crowd Control Lucky Hit Chances

Feel free to mix and match whichever gives the largest bonuses while leveling, and look forward to the meaningful Druid set bonuses in the endgame! For Lightning Storm, there are the Storm Shepherd’s Call set, granting free Storm Skills and chances to double or triple cast, and the Rush of the Red Wolf Moon set, which, if you play Lightning Storm as a Werewolf, grants a Feral Frenzy you can turn into a large Feral Rage multiplier, allowing you to dash around with Lightning Storm!

Seasonal Mechanics

There are no specific seasonal mechanics in season 13. Instead, the Lord of Hatred DLC and all of its features are available to explore. This includes:

  • War Plans
  • New Skill Trees
  • Talisman Sets
  • The Horadric Cube
  • Echoing Hatred

Enjoy the expansion!

Mercenaries

Mercenaries are followers who aid the Player. A main mercenary is chosen to fight alongside you, granting strong buffs or perks, and a secondary Mercenary is chosen to periodically Reinforce you. As you build Rapport with your Mercenary, you gain more access to their Skills and Perks.

The following Mercenary options are recommended for the Lightning Storm Leveling Druid:

Main Mercenary – Varyana, the Berserker

Reinforcement – Raheir, the Shieldbearer

Hysteria and Bloodlust will both give strong Attack Speed bonuses. Other options are viable, such as using Subo for the minimap tracking, or Raheir for Armor bonuses. You will want to level all Mercenaries for their bartering bonuses.

Build Mechanics

Rotation and Playstyle

  1. Blood HowlBlood Howl Spirit HowlSpirit Howl for Spirit and Spirit on Critical Strike.
  2. PetrifyPetrify groups of enemies to Stun and apply Critical Strike Damage taken bonuses.
  3. Cast and Hold or Clickcast spam your Lightning StormLightning Storm to grow your storm and kill your enemies.
  4. ClawClaw as filler to regenerate Spirit, and as a DashDash once unlocked at level 30.

Lightning StormLightning Storm Variation use:

  1. SupercellSupercell is for large density clearing, and we use this before level 32.
  2. OmniboltOmnibolt is for bosses, focusing damage. We use this anytime for bosses.
  3. Hero of the StormHero of the Storm unlocks at level 32. This makes Lightning Storm a toggle, which lets it automatically cast around us while we use the ClawClaw DashDash to regenerate Spirit to sustain our Storm and for mobility.

WolvesWolves are largely there for their significant Attack Speed buff on critical strike, to help tank for you, and to help trigger useful lucky hits or NaguNagu rune.

Poison CreeperPoison Creeper gives passive Fortify, and can be used as a useful Immobilize.

Skills, Support, and Synergies

The Lightning Storm Druid is a simple build to execute. Lightning StormLightning Storm is our Core Skill and main ability. It is a Channeled Skill. While channeled:

  • The storm grows, covering a larger area as the ability is held. This size is preserved for 4 seconds between channels. As the storm grows, the Lightning Bolts can become less accurate.
  • Lightning Storm scales with Attack Speed modifiers even while held Channeled. However, the rate of Cast is still limited to a set interval. Any Attack or Cast Speed past that interval causes the Lightning Storm to instead double cast.

All Variations for Lightning StormLightning Storm are usable.

  • SupercellSupercell is ideal for high-density farm content, including Helltides.
  • OmniboltOmnibolt is the best bossing and push option for directed top-end damage, focusing all lightning strikes into one superbolt. Swap to this during critical boss fights!
  • Hero of the StormHero of the Storm is a fabulous variation that turns Lightning Storm into a toggle. Activate your Storm and then use filler ClawClaw DashDash to move quickly between packs of enemies. This combination is what makes this such a speedy build!

Supporting Skills

Poison CreeperPoison Creeper generates Fortify for us to keep us healthy! The Active Use can be used as an Immobilize.

WolvesWolves are there for their supporting buffs. When WolvesWolves critically strike, we gain Attack Speed. They also are a good trigger for NaguNagu rune. With the Werewolf PackWerewolf Pack variation, they will charge Distant enemies to engage with them easier, to get those Critical Strikes off sooner. You can also choose the Thrill of the HuntThrill of the Hunt version for more Attack Speed, but their movement becomes less reliable.

Companion Skills are VersatileVersatile and keep the previous form when Cast, so they will not break your active Form. They give minor bonuses, such as VersatileVersatile Poison Creeper’s 5% extra damage.

ClawClaw is our basic Builder. It is a fast cast that gets a DashDash attached to it at level 30.

PetrifyPetrify is our Ultimate Skill, granting Spirit on cast, Resolve stacks, Stunning enemies, and applying a Critical Strike Damage Taken multiplier debuff against enemies.

When selecting the Form Node bonuses of skills like Petrify, this can depend on your bonus Skill Ranks from gear and charms. While staying Human gives an additional 5% Critical Strike Chance debuff on Petrify, if you have a lot of +Shapeshifting Ranks, then Werebear Form can be the greater option!

Spirit Management

We have several sources of Spirit Cost Reduction and Spirit Generation that make Spirit not a difficult issue to manage for this build.

  • Gift of the Stag Spirit Boon gives 5 Spirit Per Second.
  • Energize Spirit Boon for a Lucky Hit chance to Restore Spirit.
  • Any gear with Spirit Generation, Resource Generation Tempers, and Cost Reduction.
  • The Spirit Side Upgrade on PetrifyPetrify.
  • ClawClaw is used as our Basic Spirit Builder. We use the Cast Speed and Spirit side upgrades to generate even faster.
  • When you are in Human form, receive extra Spirit Generation. This is usually when using OmniboltOmnibolt during bosses.

Druids Have Options!

Any of our Supporting Skills including PetrifyPetrify, Blood HowlBlood Howl, Poison CreeperPoison Creeper, and WolvesWolves can be substituted for another desirable supporting Skill depending on playstyle preference, leveling content, or personal thematic preference. Experimenting is especially encouraged while leveling, to discover what fits you as the player.

Some examples to try can include:

  • Werewolf Form is excellent for leveling due to its passive Movement Speed, Attack Speed and access to DashDash Skills, but Druid Skills have options! Lightning Storm can be Human or Werewolf – Humans get increased Spirit Generation, which can make for comfortable play. You also get to show off your Wardrobe!
  • There’s too much Earth in my Storm build! Sure, try out Greater Cyclone ArmorGreater Cyclone Armor for some extra defense. Or CataclysmCataclysm as your Ultimate, providing wide area coverage and Vulnerable to all enemies struck. The cooldown will be a bit long.
  • Other supporting skills can help provide buffs that are missing from the build. HurricaneHurricane can provide Weaken. If you swapped your Lightning Storm to Wereform Form, you can select Masochistic Spirit Boon for Berserking.
  • Don’t like the WolvesWolves? That’s okay, they are not heartbroken. Try out other Companion Skills, including RavensRavensAdditional RavenAdditional RavenRaven FlockRaven Flock for a 5 Summon count Skill to fully Charge your NaguNagu.
  • Huh? TornadoTornado? Well sure. Just don’t use Aspect of ChannelingAspect of Channeling, Topaz Lightning Damage Multipliers or Great Storm Aspect. Tornado is not Channelled and deals physical damage. Try out TornadoTornado 15/15 -> Cast Speed, Additional TornadoAdditional Tornado, Human Form, Swelling StormSwelling Storm. Look out for FleshrenderFleshrender as your Unique of choice.

Season Updates

Lightning StormLightning Storm is looking to be one of the smoothest levelers, thanks to a few inspired Skill Tree options including OmniboltOmnibolt for bosses, and Hero of the StormHero of the Storm with DashDash for speeds. As well, the Endgame version is looking to be one of our fastest farm builds, thanks to the new Werewolf talisman set and using Lightning Storm as a targeted werewolf skill to enable a targetless dash teleport.

There are several variation options on how to play Lightning Storm; check out the Mechanics section for a better breakdown.

As ever, thanks for being here, you’re great!

Check the Patch Notes for a full list of updates. It is a lot. For general Season 13 information, check out our Season 13 Hub.

Difficulty and Endgame

Once you’re ready, at level 70 or even sooner, it’s time to start those Endgame Activities.

Choosing your World Tier: The fastest experience at the start of the run is Normal or Hard. Each additional difficulty step increases experience and rewards, but can be slower if enemies live too long, extending the leveling process. If you find a high-value Legendary Aspect multiplier like Aspect of Channeling, try out higher difficulties!

Once you’re ready at level 70 or even sooner, it’s time to start those Endgame Activities.

After Level 70, you gain no more Skill Points and instead start progressing in the Paragon Board. Allocate Paragon Points into nodes along the path to gain further power. Rare Glyphs start at 3 Radius, growing by 1 Radius at level 15, and then at level 46. Level up your glyphs by running The Pit. Early investment for this build might prioritize Spirit Generation nodes from the Ancestral GuidanceAncestral Guidance board, or it may be time to swap your Lightning Storm to Werewolf Form and grab the Lust for CarnageLust for Carnage board.

This will get you ready for that transition to the Lightning Storm Endgame Guide or other Endgame Druid Builds.

Thanks so much for reading, and good luck on leveling!
